Students in Training was began 13 years ago at East Rowan High School where Charles Patton, a teacher, and several students began rebuilding used computers and donating them to those in need. The program was such a success, that in 2005, they officially founded Students in Training as a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.

The hard work and dedication of student volunteers lies at the heart of Students in Training. Each student volunteer is taking a proactive measure to assist his or her community. During this process the student volunteers themselves gain invaluable technical knowledge through hands on experience and mentoring with certified computer technicians.

Strong partnerships with local businesses including Food Lion LLC, WG Bill Hefner VA Medical Center, and Catawba College have allowed Students in Training to expand their efforts immensely. With over 3,000 computers donated to date we still have miles to go, but every day we are taking one step closer to a total connected community.

At the beginning of 2010, Students in Training began reinventing series of internal processes to reduce administration expense while maintaining growth in its computers in communities program.

  • New financial control model and full disclosure policies.
  • New sales and service operational model.
  • Acquisition and integration of custom service and support ticketing systems, inventory control systems, and relationship management systems.
  • Redesign and migration of website and internet related systems.
  • Implementation of new communication system including ip-pbx telephone system.

Each item listed above is designed to improve community awareness of our program, reduce operating costs while providing a robust expandable infrastructure, and most importantly to provide complete disclosure of all financial activities to the public.
